WHY AI READINESS
The educational task is not simply to help students get answers faster. It is to strengthen human judgement while they learn to use AI intelligently.

Schools need a way to engage with AI while protecting the thinking that learning is meant to develop.

ADOPTING WITHOUT A LEARNING ARCHITECTURE
Tools can enter the classroom without a progression that develops reasoning, verification and responsibility.
ACCESS IS NOT CAPABILITY
A learner may know how to ask for an answer without knowing how to assess it. Readiness includes framing a question, checking evidence and recognising when help is inappropriate.
Capability ≠ authority.
Knowing how to use AI does not grant permission to use it for every task. Purpose, school boundaries and human responsibility still apply.
OUTPUT IS NOT THINKING
A fluent explanation can conceal an unchecked assumption. A correct result may reveal little about whether the student can explain, test or reproduce the reasoning.
Correct output is not complete evidence of thinking.
Ask the learner what they tried, what they checked and why they accepted—or changed—the answer.
A confident answer is not the same as a supported answer.
WHY PROHIBITION ALONE IS INADEQUATE
Some tasks should be completed without AI. Those moments protect independent thinking and give teachers a clearer view of understanding.
But prohibition alone does not teach students how to judge AI when they encounter it elsewhere. They also need opportunities to learn its limits and practise responsible choices.
WHY UNRESTRICTED ACCESS IS INADEQUATE
Unrestricted access can make it easy to skip the first attempt, accept an explanation or hand over a decision before understanding the problem.
Purposeful access keeps the learner involved: think first, use appropriate assistance, check the result and explain the final choice. Age, task and demonstrated readiness shape the boundaries.
TEACHERS REMAIN CENTRAL
Teachers recognise hesitation, misconceptions and progress in context. They can decide when to offer support, introduce a counterexample or let a student work through a difficulty.
AI can assist an activity. It does not replace the teacher’s responsibility to guide learning, interpret evidence and exercise educational judgement.
READINESS DEVELOPS PROGRESSIVELY
Start with noticing, testing and explaining. Build towards evaluating claims, designing solutions and judging systems. Age sets a developmental context; evidence of readiness shapes the support and access within it.
Can the learner explain a rule, test it and revise it?
Does a claim have support, and what are its limits? Pattern ≠ cause.
A strong score is not enough to justify use. Technical performance ≠ system suitability.
